Well... it depends.

When DIY is probably the best choice

If you've got a small amount to move and you're reasonably fit, organised and confident behind the wheel, DIY could be the winner.

For example, moving from a small flat in Lowestoft to another nearby property with a few boxes, a bed and some furniture probably doesn't require a military operation.

A hired van and a couple of helpful friends could do the job.

This is probably the most important point.

When comparing DIY removals, Man and Van services and removals companies, don't simply compare the headline price.

Compare what you're actually getting.

Ask:

• What size van will be used?
• Is loading and unloading included?
• Are furniture protection materials provided?
• Is the service insured?
• Are there additional charges?
• What happens if the move takes longer?
• Can they dismantle and reassemble furniture?
• Can they provide packing services?
• What happens if your completion time changes?

A £200 quote isn't necessarily cheaper than a £300 quote if the £200 option requires you to hire equipment, make two trips and spend 12 hours doing the lifting yourself.

Sometimes the cheapest quote is simply the one with the most unpaid work attached to it.

So... DIY, Man and Van or removals company?

For a small move: DIY can make perfect sense.

For a handful of larger items: Man and Van is often ideal.
