Moving house is a bit like making a cup of tea.
You start off thinking, "That'll only take a few minutes."
Then, three hours later, you're surrounded by boxes, you've lost the kettle, and someone is asking where the extension lead has gone.
So, how long does it actually take to move house?
The short answer is: longer than you think, but usually not as long as it feels.
At Move My Stuff Lowestoft, we've moved enough sofas, wardrobes, boxes and suspiciously heavy "miscellaneous" items to know that every move is different. But there are a few rough timings you can work with.
The average house move
For a typical 2–3 bedroom home, the actual loading and unloading can often take around 4–8 hours, depending on how much stuff you've accumulated, how easy the properties are to access and whether your sofa has decided it absolutely must go through a particular doorway.
A smaller flat or one-bedroom home could be considerably quicker.
A large family home? Well... let's just say you may want to clear your diary.
And remember, the removal itself is only one part of moving house.
What can make moving day take longer?
1. How much stuff you have
This is the big one.
If your loft contains 20 boxes labelled "Christmas", "Old Stuff" and "Definitely Keep", we're going to need some time.
The more belongings you have, the longer it takes to carry, load, secure, transport and unload everything.
Decluttering before moving day can make a surprisingly big difference.
Although we understand that "I might need that one day" is legally binding in the world of moving house.
2. Stairs
Stairs are where your beautifully efficient moving plan can suddenly develop a personality.
A ground-floor property with easy access is considerably quicker than a three-storey townhouse where every box needs to climb Mount Everest before reaching the van.
If you have stairs, narrow hallways or awkward corners, let your removal team know beforehand.
3. Parking
Ah, parking.
The silent villain of moving day.
If the van can park right outside your front door, brilliant.
If the nearest legal parking space is approximately three streets away, everything takes longer.
Good access means less carrying, fewer journeys and a much happier removal team.
4. The furniture
Some furniture moves beautifully.
Some furniture behaves like it was specifically designed to defeat removal professionals.
Large wardrobes, corner sofas, beds and dining tables can all take longer if they need dismantling and reassembling.
If something won't fit through the door, don't panic. We've got experience with the classic "It came in here, so surely it must come out of here" situation.
How long should you allow on moving day?
Our advice?
Give yourself more time than you think you need.
If everything goes smoothly, fantastic. You'll finish early and can crack open the kettle—assuming you've remembered which box it's in.
But if there are delays with keys, traffic, parking, access or the discovery of an enormous box of books nobody remembered owning, you'll have some breathing room.
For many moves, allowing a full day for the removal itself is sensible, particularly for larger homes.
And don't forget the time at either end. You'll need to get everything ready before the movers arrive and then spend some time getting settled afterwards.
The secret to a quicker move?
Preparation.
It sounds boring.
It is boring.
It is also extremely effective.
Have your belongings packed and labelled before moving day. Keep important documents, medicines, chargers and a few essentials somewhere easy to find. Make sure pathways and doorways are clear.
And, crucially, don't leave the entire contents of the kitchen to be packed at 7:45am while the removal van is already outside.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.
A small, well-prepared move with easy access might be completed in just a few hours. A larger family move can take most of a day or longer.
