REMOVALS COMPANY OR DO IT YOURSELF?
It's often been said, that moving is up there with one of Life's most stressful events. As clichéd as this sounds, it can certainly be the case for individuals who have embarked on carrying out their own home removal. We know many people who have attempted to and deeply regretted the decision. All in a valiant attempt to save a few quid!
Let's take a look.
Hiring a van
After making the conscious decision to take on the task of moving house yourself, having had some quotations from various removal companies, which, having gazed upon their final price has somewhat brought on a bout of involuntary eye watering. You've decided to look at hiring a vehicle, and take on the move yourself.
You've contacted the local van rental company who can offer you a Luton van (the only vehicle you're legally able to drive on a full UK driving licence obtained after 1997) at around £80.00 - £100.00 per day (prices which you can expect to pay in Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth and Norwich) plus any additional insurances that you may require. (There is cheaper options available, but you could be subjected to an impromptu Flintstones moment!). You've also got to factor in that there's fuel charges to be accounted for. Which you have to top up on completion of the rental period. It might not seem much, but it soon adds up!
Judging how long you're going to need the vehicle for is something else which is easily underestimated and overlooked. Moving a three-bed house locally, between two inexperienced and reluctant people who have been assigned the role of removal men, could easily take up to 2 days to complete (more often than not, the removal men in question, would be yourself, and your once, best friend!). Family are also keen to start with, but whittle away as the day and the workload marches relentlessly on. Leaving weary bodies and minds to contemplate - whoever thought this was a good idea..?!
With all this in mind, you could easily rack up expenses in excess of £130 plus per day.
Loading the van
While it's not an exact science, there is some strategic planning and forethought required in to loading a removals van efficiently and effectively. Unfortunately, this comes with experience. And seeing as its not something you're going to do on a regular basis, it's probably not something you're going to be too familiar with. Loading the vehicle haphazardly, will not only prolong the move unnecessarily, but it will also cause you more expense and frustration in the process. Loading and unloading times will increase significantly without the right knowledge, and enthusiasm will undoubtedly taper off. On top of that, you have to be mindful that the hire van doesn't come with removal blankets, webbing ties or a sack barrow! Leaving you with question, why did I take on this task in the first place?
There's no getting away from it, moving is bloody hard graft!
